Cowork Is on Your Phone. But the Desktop Still Wins

For a long time, one of the most common questions about Claude's Cowork feature was simple: why is it only on the desktop? Anthropic just answered that question, but the answer comes with an important asterisk.

Cowork is now available on the web and the Claude mobile app. It syncs. It's real. And in the latest episode of Automate Your Agency, Alane Boyd and Micah Johnson broke down exactly what that means, what it doesn't mean, and how to use the update without giving up what makes Cowork worth using in the first place.

What Actually Changed

Before this update, Cowork was desktop-only. There was a feature called Dispatch that let you communicate with Cowork via the Claude mobile app, but it was limited: a single chat thread, no syncing, no ability to pick up where you left off. Most users, including Alane and Micah, never really used it.

Now, Cowork is available on web and mobile, and it syncs across all three surfaces. Start a task on your laptop, and you can check on it from your phone. That's real progress.

But here's the catch that matters.

The File System Is Still Desktop-Only

If you start a Cowork task directly from the web or your mobile device, you don't have file system access. That means no loading files from your hard drive, no CLAUDE.md auto-loading, no brand kit, no project folder. You get your Connectors and your Skills, which is still useful, but it's a fundamentally different experience than full Cowork on the desktop.

Micah put it plainly in the episode: at that point, it's really just a "super chat." More capable than standard chat, but much closer to it than to full Cowork.

The One Scenario Where Full Mobile Cowork Works

Here's where it gets interesting. If you start a Cowork task on your desktop and leave your laptop on, open, and connected to the internet, you can continue that task from your phone with full Cowork capabilities. The mobile session ties back to the active desktop, and everything stays connected.

The practical applications are limited, most people close their laptops when they walk away, but there are real use cases. Micah floated the idea of starting a task, heading out for a walk, and continuing from your phone while the laptop stays on at your desk. And for teams with field workers, it opens up an interesting possibility: a Claude Desktop instance running back at the office, with field staff accessing full Cowork from the field.

The Workaround for a Beta Bug

Micah also caught a bug during testing worth knowing about: Claude was getting confused between local files and "staged files": the version of your files pushed to the cloud for web and mobile access. It led to errors and stalled tasks.

The fix that worked 100% of the time: start your task inside a Project and connect your local folder to the Project, rather than pointing a standalone task directly at a folder. That structure helped Claude correctly differentiate between local and cloud-staged files.

Anthropic has already pushed updates since the bug was found, so it may already be patched. But if you're in the beta and you hit it, now you know what to try.

Why the Folder System Matters More Than Ever

Alane made a point in the episode that's worth calling out directly: most Cowork users who aren't getting the full benefit are skipping the folder system.

The Connectors and Skills get a lot of attention because they're visible and impressive. But the folder system: ,having Claude work out of a specific project folder with your CLAUDE.md file, your brand assets, your reference documents, is what makes Cowork feel like it actually knows your business. When Alane started being consistent about working out of a folder, she didn't have to re-explain her brand every time. Claude already knew it.

The mobile update makes this setup question even more pressing. If you're not using the folder system, the difference between desktop and mobile Cowork is invisible to you — but you're also not getting what full Cowork actually delivers.

Where to Start

If you're new to Cowork or haven't set up your folder system yet, Alane mentioned the free Cowork Masterclass at your.biggestgoal.ai. It's 26 lessons, free, and specifically designed to walk you through getting configured the right way, including the folder system and the CLAUDE.md file.

The mobile update is heading in the right direction. It's beta, it's early, and it has real limitations. But for teams who understand how to use the folder system and start on desktop first, mobile Cowork is a genuine upgrade, not a gimmick.

Listen to the full episode of Automate Your Agency for the complete breakdown.

Show Notes

Cowork just got a massive update, it's no longer locked to your desktop. Alane Boyd and Micah Johnson dig into what Anthropic actually shipped, why it's more nuanced than the headlines suggest, and what it means for how you get work done with Claude.

If you've ever wondered why Cowork felt chained to your laptop, this episode answers that question, and then immediately complicates it. The file system access that makes Cowork truly powerful is still desktop-only, and understanding that boundary changes how you'll approach every task.

In this episode, you'll learn:

  • What actually changed between Dispatch, Chat, and the new mobile and web Cowork
  • Why starting on desktop still matters and when mobile Cowork becomes a genuine upgrade
  • The folder system advantage that most Cowork users are completely skipping — and how it changes everything
  • A real beta bug Micah caught during testing and the workaround that fixed it 100% of the time
  • The field worker use case that makes full mobile Cowork possible for teams who aren't always at a desk
  • When Connectors and Skills can carry a task even without the file system

If you're using Claude for real work and want to know exactly how to use the new mobile features without losing what makes Cowork powerful, press play now.
